Overview Oaken:
The world of Oaken is a mythical place, existing in a not easily defined space and time. It is stretched among the branches of the Great Oak. Its inhabitants are spirits which listen to the same voice, called the Oak Song. The loss of that voice starts a series of events leading into a struggle which may either heal or destroy the Great Oak. Roguelike, hero-oriented campaign with deck management. A mystical world inhabited by spirits with celtic and tribal vibes. A randomly generated world map with tons of levels, bosses and events to be discovered. Unique, highly tactical battles on a hexagonal grid, where position and rotation is everything. Upgrade your spells and spirits the way you want. Easy to learn, hard to master – chill and challenge modes suitable for any player. At the beginning of a fight, you will draw random cards from your deck. You can redraw some that aren’t to your liking. At first, only your Hero unit will be on the board. Your unit has a “frontal arc”, which denotes where it’s facing. If an enemy attacks your unit from any of the front 3 faces of its hexagon, your unit will counter attack. These rules apply for every unit in the game, with a few exceptions. This promotes strategic placement of your units. If you attack an enemy from the back, you will not receive damage. However, sometimes taking the counter attack damage is worth it, because time can be of the essence in Oaken. You will find yourself swarmed at times, and many enemies come with traits that make them tricky to fight, like detonating upon death, or lowering your max health for the chapter. I really liked how complex combat could get. Trinkets you pick up can change matches quite extensively, as well as map modifiers. To further emphasis my point, enemies sometimes turn tiles purple, to give them buffs when the occupy them. However, you can benefit from green tiles, battling over converting tiles can get quite interesting. On top of that, every card you play can only be used once in a fight. Well, actually, they will return. But in a special form. If you decide to use them in this form, they will be exhausted from your deck for the duration of the current chapter. So it’s quite a fun risk-reward mechanic to play around with.
